FAQ
Murmur, answered
Everything people ask about on-device transcription, speaker labels, exporting and privacy.
Privacy
Are my recordings uploaded anywhere?
No. Recording, transcription, speaker identification and translation all run on your device. Your recordings and transcripts are never sent to our servers.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no login. Install the app and start recording.
What about iCloud sync?
iCloud sync is optional and off unless you turn it on. When enabled, your recordings and transcripts sync through your own private iCloud account — we never see it.
Where can I read the privacy policy?
The full policy is published at murmur-recorder.com/privacy.html.
Transcription
How does on-device transcription work?
You download a speech recognition model once. After that the model runs locally on your phone, so transcription needs no network and nothing leaves the device.
Does it work offline?
Yes — that is the point of running locally. Once the model is downloaded, Murmur transcribes on a plane, in a basement, or anywhere with no signal.
Which languages can it transcribe?
100+ spoken languages, detected automatically from the audio. The app interface is available in English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Korean and French.
Can I transcribe a file I already have?
Yes. Import any audio or video file — a voice memo, a meeting recording, a lecture — and Murmur transcribes it on-device with speakers labeled.
How long can a recording be?
Long recordings keep running in the background. After transcription Murmur compresses the audio automatically to reclaim storage, without losing the transcript or playback.
Speakers
How does Murmur know who is speaking?
It separates the distinct voices in a recording and labels every transcript line with the speaker who said it, color-coded so a multi-person conversation is easy to follow.
Does it recognize the same person in a later recording?
Yes. Murmur keeps a library of people across your recordings — name a voice once and it is recognized the next time that person speaks.
What if it gets a speaker wrong?
Rename the speaker, merge duplicates, or relearn a voice. The more you correct someone, the better Murmur identifies them in future recordings.
Export and sharing
What formats can I export?
Plain text, Markdown, PDF, Word — each line carrying its speaker, plus your translation if you made one. You can share the original audio file too.
Can I use Murmur with ChatGPT or another AI assistant?
Yes, and that is the intended workflow: Murmur produces clean, speaker-attributed text on your device, and you decide which assistant — if any — summarizes it. Nothing is forced through us.
Can I translate the transcript?
Yes. Transcripts translate line by line on-device, readable as translation-only or side by side with the original.
Devices and pricing
Which devices are supported?
iPhone, iPad and Android. Murmur is a universal iOS app with an iPad-tuned layout on larger screens. It requires iOS 18 or later on Apple devices and Android 8.0 or later.
How much does Murmur cost?
Murmur is free to download, and recording, on-device transcription, speaker labels, translation and export need no account.
Where do I get support?
Support and contact details are at shosin-labs.com.
